Bill's Pre-Ride Checklist
After your bike has been sitting all winter, there are several pre-ride checks you should do...
- Make sure battery is fully charged and cables are tight.
- Check oil for proper level recommended for your bike.
- Check spark plugs. Remove and check gap or install new. I recommend replacing plugs every 5000 miles. It's cheap insurance!
- Check for proper tire pressure. See your owners manual for recommended (psi) Also check tires for wear, dry rot, or cracks
- Check air filter if your bike is stored over the winter. Sometimes a mouse will create a nest in the air cleaner or battery area.
- Check all operations of lights and brake lights.
- After checking all of these items, fire it up. Allow plenty of warm up time. Remember that the oil has to circulate through the entire motor. Make sure the oil light on the dash or oil gauge reads normal oil pressure. If not, shut down immediately. If everything is okay, wait until the head area is warm to the touch—by this time the engine is up to the proper temperature.
- Finally top off tank with 93 octane fuel.
Follow these easy steps and you will be ready to hit the highways. Don't forget to pack your rainsuit or jackets for unexpected weather changes.
Being prepared will help you enjoy this riding season...Ride Safe!
